A lot of people have heard of halal meat, which means the only type of meat that Muslims consume. A lot of people however don't know what the term "halal" refers to and what constitutes meat as being as halal - or the opposite - haram. Jews abide by "kosher" and similarly Muslims abide by "halal". The following provides a very clear introduction to what actually constitutes halal slaughter. The following conditions are required for something to be considered halal: 1. Only fish can be consumed without being slaughtered, everything else must be slaughtered before being consumed. 2. It is unlawful to eat meat slaughtered by a Zoroastrian, someone who has left Islam or someone who worships idols. 3. It is permissible to slaughter with anything that has a cutting edge: this does not include a claw, bone, tooth or the like. 4. The windpipe of the animal along with the gullet must be cut. The carotid arteries don't necessarily have to be cut for the slaughter to be valid. 5. Should the slaughterer neglect to cut any part of either the windpipe or gullet and the animal passes away, it is considered haram. 6. The slaughter should complete quickly. Here are some recommended things to do: 1. To make the animal face Makkah towards the Qiblah. 2. To sharpen the knife. 3. To cut rapidly (meaning as quickly as you possibly can). 4. To say "Bismillah". 5. To send blessings on the Prophet (s.a.w). 6. To cut the blood arteries that are found on both sides of the neck.
