Advice is something too many of us don't heed and then we realize that it would have been wise to listen. If you are planning to open a new restaurant I have some great advice for you that you can't afford to ignore. Too many new restaurants fail because the owner doesn't have the right information to make it work. Very few restaurants close because the food part of the business is bad! It is all the other factors that you have to cover that allow things to start unraveling from the very beginning. Since you will likely have several other restaurants to compete with you have to exceed the expectations of the consumers. You want them to have a perfect experience each time they enter your restaurant. Everything from the dcor to the serve to the food has to be more than just average. In order for this to work though you have to order quality supplies, make sure you take care of repairs, and have the very best people working for you. Some owners don't want to take the time to contact references or past employers. However, you don't want to have a packed restaurant for dinner and no waitresses because those you hired aren't reliable. They have a spotty work history where they go to work when they want to - only you didn't know this because you didn't look into how responsible they have been in the past. Another area where many restaurant owners fail to spend enough time is on training. Remember that the attitude and service from your employees is going to be a direct reflection of you and your business. Make sure they know the right way to greet customers, how to deal with unhappy customers, and the flow of the procedures that take place in your restaurant. In addition to keeping your customers happy though you also need to take the time to keep your employees happy. If they like their job it will show through in their attitude and their efforts. If they hate coming to work everyday the customers will be able to pick up on it. When your employees are happy they are going to show up to work on time and take care of things. You also won't have to continually interview, hire, and train new people for the positions offered in your restaurant. Putting a new waitress on the floor during a lunch rush isn't going to be effective for your business. She is likely to become very frazzled and lose confidence in here abilities. At the same time you are going to have annoyed customers that are hungry. Many of them only have a limited amount of time for lunch too and then they have to get back to work. Keep track of basic items too such as condiments, napkins, and straws. These are all items that your customers will expect in order to have a good dining experience. The overall appearance of your restaurant is important too. Keep the tables and the floors clean. Take care of any problems that arise such as toilets that don't flush or tables that wobble. All of these little things start to give a bad impression of your restaurant. The advantage you have is that you now know about these other issues and you can make the choice to make them a priority. You may find you have plenty of work to do before you can even open your restaurant based on this information. Waiting to open it though until you are 100% prepared can be the difference between it being a prosperous business for you in a year or being an empty building. The choice is yours to take the advice offered or to ignore it.
