RV Accessories For The Modern Family

By: Jerry Grossman

I remember when my uncle Bert bought one of the very first RV's ever made, many years ago. Boy oh boy, things have sure changed. Back then you could hardly walk around in those things, and sitting at the tablewell, let's just say that your deodorant had better be working. But that's the past -- today's RV's are spacious and more comfortable than ever. I thought that in this article I would give you my recommendations for some useful RV accessories.

What should be the first thing on your list? Here's my number one recommendation: an RV air conditioner. Yes, I know they are expensive, but they are worth it. They will keep you cool and comfy in the hottest of weather - and that's no small feat if you are traveling in the south this summer! I repeat: make the purchase of a good RV air conditioner the first thing on your shopping list.

The next item: an RV backup camera. If you own a rig you don't need me to tell you about the hassle parking your rig can be - especially if you have to back that monster up. RV backup cameras eliminate most of that hassle by transmitting an image of the back end of your rig on a display monitor, so you can see just what is going on back there. You can even get units which display the screen image on one half of a specially-designed rearview mirror. Talk about high-tech!

Want a more down-to-earth recommendation? Well, what about investing in a new RV holding tank? The holding tank is the tank that holds all your family's 'human waste' (you know what that is, don't you?) until your load can be dumped (sorry about the pun) at your local campsite dumping station. Get yours checked regularly, especially for leaks - and if necessary, get one installed.

And since you're at it, you might as well have your fresh water tank inspected as well, as this is the tank that you will draw your fresh water from while you are on the road, away from any campsite. And when you get that inspected, make sure that your water pump is inspected as well - this device maintains adequate water pressure throughout your RV fresh water system. If your RV water pump goes belly-up, you will be left high and dry.

Want some more recommendations? Well, how about a good quality TV? Conventional wisdom says you're not supposed to be watching TV when you are out, but let's face it - everyone does. And if the wife wants to watch her favorite soap opera, she'll thank you that you brought one along.

But unless you want your kids to stare into a blank, dark screen, you will also need to invest in an RV satellite antenna. Without one of these devices you will not be able to receive any TV signals while vacationing.

So, there you are -- some GREAT accessories for your RV, accessories for modern families, that is. So, get down to your local RV dealership and get some of this stuff. We'll see you on the road this summer!
