Niche Marketing As Viewed From Eastern Thought

By: Rick London..

I went back to college at age 47 as I was beginning to discover the world was leaving me behind. Not only was I a terrible student in my early 20's even if I had been a good one, nothing counted. Not much in the world of marketing and pr is very relavent. In fact, my recent college accepted not one credit of my 63 hours from a major state university. So be it.

Or is there?

There was. At least at first. All three built their "foundations" on one particular thing they did well. Ebay for instance was the place to buy and sell Pez dispensers in its early days. Yahoo was only a search directory and Google a search engine. No other real products or services. In other words they kept it very simple and did what they did best.

We renegade entrepreneurs, at least this one, found that he does not fit into the corporate 9-5 world. They are not too keen on "some misfit" constantly reinventing the wheel, but reinvent the wheel I must, even if I get knocked down, which is often. I can honstely say I have about one success to every 10 failures. The odds were much worse in 1997 when I started

In Zen philosophy, this is known as yin and yang, opposite forces that our soul feels, yet we often try to deny.

Take advantage of the opportunities on the net by spending a few extra hours a week researching. Most e-books I've found are replicas of others and offer nothing new or cutting-edge. All the information in them are free at websites and usually better-written with less typos. And I tend to run from Internet gurus anyway. I suggest you do the same.

The other day I was looking at some statistics of what were the top sellers (especially at Ebay); and, of course not surprisingly, Ipods, consumer electronics, Armani, Gucci, and the usual suspects. I even did further research to find out the few legitimate wholesaler/drop shippers Could this be my "big break"? When I say big break, I do not mean "finally make money on the Internet". I have been doing that for several years and it is virtually on autopilot now. Am I in the league with the big dogs? More like a barbarian at the gate. But I do okay.

When or if you can't find something on the web to sell you like, then try creating your own. If you are an artist, got to Cafe Press or one of their competitors and digitally produce products. Let them worry with inventory and orders and such.

You have an advantage if you owned copyrighted art or slogans. Take advantage. There are plenty of print on demand companies who will do all the worl for you.

My successes were mostly hit and miss and by accident. i did not follow the rulebooks but ignorantly just kept plugging along. This is okay, I could have "arrived" much sooner, but I didn't research or study much early on. I was too busy creating. I should have been creating balance and doing both. Live and learn.

I researched and decided to test a shop and call it Just Funny Aprons. I put my cartoon designs on it, spent a bit on adveritising, and presto, people were ordering funny aprons. The niche business principle still holds true. They were begging for unique funny aprons and still are.

This is not a get rich fast venture. It is more of a get comfortable slow venture. But it is a very good way to build a foundation for a tremendous business and you can do it if you stay focused, use a little common sense and discipline, and goodwill towards your customer base.

Sell to others something you would like to buy yourself at a price you would like to pay. Transcend your own soul and put yourself in his/her shoes. We are not all that much different.

Then promote, promote, promote with blogs, article marketing, ppc engines, pinging, and every other method of which you can think. Suddenly you will wake up successful. The odds are on your side. The harder you work, the more research you do, the more action you take, the luckier you get. In fact, the big dogs did the same thing to become big dogs, and they have nothing on you, if you just allow yourself to take the action. Keep an open mind and be prepared for failure and success. You will have your share of both.

It is not how many times you fall down that count, but how many times you get back up. And if you use your "Zen", you will get back up. It's all a matter of physics, getting pulled back into balance.
