How to Create a Website for Your Small Business

By: Stacy Fox

Because I created my attorney husband’s internet site, people often ask me how to develop a website for their own small business. The fact of the matter is that it is not as difficult as it first appears. In fact, using a cheap web package like SBI, one can create a small business site that is professional and pre-sells.

How do you pre-sell? Basically, that means that you provide the resources about your goods and services to gain the trust of your internet visitor. Then, when they are ready to approach a business about solving their problem, they will come to you.

That’s exactly what we did with my spouse’s site. We have sixty-plus pages of information about issues such as the phases of divorce, child custody, alimony, property issues, etc..

We also have a unique “Ask Julian Anything” feature where people can email questions about their individual divorce case to my husband and get a return answer by email. We of course include a “call to action” in these reply emails urging them to contact the office and schedule an appointment to more fully discuss their case.

We get approximately fifty percent of our traffic through pay per click and fifty percent through organic traffic. Even paying for website visitors, we spend less than half of what we would on a phone book ad. And, the results from the web are better.

To build the site, we made a list of the type of questions people facing a family law action typically have. Then, we wrote articles answering those questions. Then – and here’s a key step – we found keywords that didn’t have too much competition and optimized the pages for those words. So, when you type in “restoring former name”, his firm come up early in the Google search pages.

Site Build It makes it easy to build a website like this. They offer a built in keyword search tool. They also take you hand in hand through the optimization process. You only have to type in your keywords into a form for each page.

Then, Site Build It helps you submit the site to directories so that you can be found by customers searching for you.

Many small business owners think the only way to build a website is to hire a web design firm to do it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, you should invest the time to create a professional site using a resource like Site Build It.

And, that is how you build a website for your small business.
