Choosing A Cat

The basic classification of the breeds is into groups based on coat length. There are thus longhairs and shorthairs. The longhairs comprise two quite distinct types.

There are those of Persian origin, which have profuse coats, and those of foreign origin. This latter term is used to describe the physical conformation of a Siamese cat, stocky and solidly built feline. The shorthairs are likewise divisible into the European types, with cobby powerful bodies and round heads, and the foreigns. The latter, again, are most readily appreciated as being of the Siamese type- from which a number were developed. They have lithe bodies and a wedge-shaped head. Cats thus have three main basic ancestral stocks, with two subdivisions:

If your kitten will be left alone all day, it may be kinder to have two, to keep each other company. But an only cat will be perfectly happy so long as its needs are met. Two kittens may be twice as much fun - but also twice the cost in neutering, vaccinations and food.

Ensure that curiosity does not kill your cat by checking the house for dangers. Tuck electrical wires out of the way where they can not be chewed, and remember to put away posionous household chemicals such as bleach. With a new cat or kitten, it 's good idea to protect your home as well, by moving breakable ornaments and house plants.

Grooming is more than beauty care. Longhairs depend on daily brushing to prevent tangles which, if neglected, may need to be clipped out by the vet.Brush the fur gently, without tugging. Go against the way it naturally lies, lifting the fur upwards and outwards so that you work right to the roots. A comb is useful for lifting out dead hair. Finish off the cat's face fur and neck ruffs with a smaller brush. An old toothbrush is ideal for this fine work - but please do not borrow one from the bathroom!

This breed would not be accepted by a number of registrations were it not for its long establishment. It is based on a generic abnormality that many associations today would outlaw.The number of cat breeds that you can choose from will be between 35-50, depending on the country you live in and which cats are accepted as breeds by the differing registration authorities.
